Nobel winner says AIDS came from Laboratory!

October 9 Wangari Maathai

On this date in 2004, Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai restated her claim that the AIDS virus was a deliberately created biological agent. The 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner said "Some say that AIDS came from the monkeys, and I doubt that because we have been living with monkeys (since) time immemorial, others say it was a curse from God, but I say it cannot be that. "Us black people are dying more than any other people in this planet."

Maathai spoke at a press conference in Nairobi a day after winning the prize for her work in human rights and reversing deforestation across Africa. "It's true that there are some people who create agents to wipe out other people. If there were no such people, we could have not have invaded Iraq." Maathai, also the Kenyan deputy environment and natural resources minister, and fearless speaker said. "In fact it the HIV virus is created by a scientist for biological warfare. Why has there been so much secrecy about AIDS? When you ask where did the virus come from, it raises a lot of flags. That makes me suspicious."

Africa accounts for 25 million out of the estimated 38 million people across the world infected with HIV, and the vast majority of infected Africans are women, according to UNAIDS estimates. The United States congratulated Maathai on winning the Nobel Peace Prize, but tempered its praise over her claims about AIDS. "She said (HIV/AIDS) was invented as a bio-weapon in some laboratory in the West," a senior State Department official said. "We don't agree with that."

A WORD ON BLACK LOOKS

Black Looks: Plastic Surgery and the Stigma of Looking White
By Kevin R. Scott, Special to AOL Black Voices
Historically, elective plastic surgery was something reserved for our white counterparts or our own eccentrics like Michael Jackson and Lil’ Kim. And although it’s become a standard and popular practice, African Americans still exhibit reluctance disproportionate to most other populations. “People of color, we’re a little bit behind the times in some things and certainly plastic surgery is one of them” explains Dr. Anthony Griffin, renowned Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, author of ‘Surgery Without Scars, A Worry-Free, Multi-Cultural Guide to Plastic Surgery Today’ and the host of ABC’s ‘Extreme Makeover.’

Griffin has found that “the biggest concern people of color have with plastic surgery is that they don’t want to look white. They want to still look like themselves. They want to fit right into their own culture.” This very same concern was shared by Patti LaBelle who admits to having a “nose reduction” over ten years ago. “I was afraid people would be able to look at me and say, ‘Oh yeah, she had a nose job!’ I also wanted to make sure I still had a black nose,” says LaBelle who underwent the surgery at the risk of altering her now Grammy award winning vocals.

“I was concerned about scarring. I was afraid people would be able to look at me and say, ‘Oh yeah, she had a nose job!’ I also wanted to make sure I still had a black nose. I didn't want to go extreme and have a very small nose. I was also afraid that it would change my voice, but it didn't make it better or worse, it stayed the same.”

Type of Surgery? “A nose reduction.”

Plastic Surgeon? “Dr. Julius Newman. He died about 3 months ago. I called him "Dr. Nose."

Would you do it again? "Of course, in a heartbeat."

Celebrity Plastic Surgery
Back to BV Health
The stigma of ‘looking white’ has been over dramatized by those that go overboard with their enhancements. Griffin refers to these types of patients as “frequent flyers” and admits that celebrities like Michael Jackson have become the poster children of the very thing African Americans fear with regard to plastic surgery, especially when it comes to procedures like rhinoplasty. “His plastic surgeon is a great surgeon, however there must have been a breakdown in the communication,” says Griffin who turns away nearly 1/3 of his patients wanting enhancements that are socially and psychologically inappropriate.

LaBelle’s decision to reduce the size of her nose was driven by her own personal satisfaction and not pressure from industry insiders. “I didn't feel pressure to do it, I just knew I needed to,” she says. “I saw Stephanie Mills, she came to my house for dinner and something looked cute about her and I asked her if she had gotten any work done and she told me she had gotten her nose fixed. I had been thinking about having it done and I knew a lot of television opportunities would be coming up but I was afraid of the pain, but she told me it didn't hurt.”

As pioneers like Dr. Griffin continue to research and specialize in elective plastic surgery for people of color, the negative connotations are slowly dissipating, largely in part to reality shows like ‘Extreme Makeover.’

Popular Elective Plastic Surgery Procedures:
Breast Augmentation, Lift or Reduction
Liposuction
Tummy Tuck
Abdominplasty
Rhinoplasty
Brow Lift
Eye Lid Rejuvenation
Facial Resurfacing
Face Lift
More on BV Health
“When they can actually see people on television transformed by a surgeon every week, they say ‘oh ok’ and the realization that they still look like themselves or have retained their inherent ethnic features,” explains Dr. Griffin.

The concerns of scarring and the development of keloids for people of color is just as significant as the stigma of ‘looking white.’ Recent advances in research and technology has allowed Dr. Griffin to reduce the occurrence of scarring and the formation of keloids. “Fear of scarring, more than any other single factor, keeps some population of patients from seeking elective plastic surgery” Griffin offers.

With the practice of preconditioning the skin with Retin-A six weeks prior to any surgery, which increases blood supply and controls the production of collagen, introducing a three phased antibiotic administration, the use of an anesthesia with adrenaline, and meticulous incision closure; Griffin has been able to significantly reduce scarring in people of color, making marks in most cases imperceptible.

Griffin is confident that as the new procedures continue to be demonstrated on television and become apparent in A-list celebrities, many of which are his clients, that the number of procedures elected by people of color will continually increase. His practice already has a year long waiting list for procedures such as his two specialties, the Brazilian Butt Lift© and the Six Pack Tummy Tuck©.

Overall, Griffin believes elective plastic surgery will become as commonplace as routine dental work. Although Griffin is credited with helping the paradigm shift, he admits that it’s often a difficult and thankless job with all the glory going to Mother Nature. “I do work on a fair amount of A-List celebrities and they don’t want tell anyone. If you do a good job, nobody thanks you!”

NSA Gave Other U.S. Agencies Information From Surveillance

Fruit of Eavesdropping Was Processed and Cross-Checked With Databases

By Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, January 1, 2006; A08

Information captured by the National Security Agency's secret eavesdropping on communications between the United States and overseas has been passed on to other government agencies, which cross-check the information with tips and information collected in other databases, current and former administration officials said.

The NSA has turned such information over to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and to other government entities, said three current and former senior administration officials, although it could not be determined which agencies received what types of information. Information from intercepts -- which typically includes records of telephone or e-mail communications -- would be made available by request to agencies that are allowed to have it, including the FBI, DIA, CIA and Department of Homeland Security, one former official said.

At least one of those organizations, the DIA, has used NSA information as the basis for carrying out surveillance of people in the country suspected of posing a threat, according to two sources. A DIA spokesman said the agency does not conduct such domestic surveillance but would not comment further. Spokesmen for the FBI, the CIA and the director of national intelligence, John D. Negroponte, declined to comment on the use of NSA data.

Since the revelation last month that President Bush had authorized the NSA to intercept communications inside the United States, public concern has focused primarily on the legality of the NSA eavesdropping. Less attention has been paid to, and little is known about, how the NSA's information may have been used by other government agencies to investigate American citizens or to cross-check with other databases. In the 1960s and 1970s, the military used NSA intercepts to maintain files on U.S. peace activists, revelations of which prompted Congress to restrict the NSA from intercepting communications of Americans.

Today's NSA intercepts yield two broad categories of information, said a former administration official familiar with the program: "content," which would include transcripts of a phone call or e-mail, and "non-content," which would be records showing, for example, who in the United States was called by, or was calling, a number in another country thought to have a connection to a terrorist group. At the same time, NSA tries to limit identifying the names of Americans involved.

"NSA can make either type of information available to other [intelligence] agencies where relevant, but with appropriate masking of its origin," meaning that the source of the information and method of getting it would be concealed, the former official said.

Tookie's Timeline

Follow a timeline of Stanley Tookie Williams' life from his birth to his Dec. 13, 2005, execution by lethal injection:

Dec. 29, 1953 -- Stanley Tookie Williams III is born in New Orleans Charity Hospital to a 17-year-old mother and a father who deserted the family before Williams' first birthday, according to his autobiography, Blue Rage, Black Redemption.

1959 -- Williams and his mother ride a Greyhound bus to California and settle in an apartment in South-Central Los Angeles. Williams recalls it as an affluent-looking neighborhood -- "a shiny red apple rotting away at the core."

1971 -- Williams joins the Crips street gang, already formed by high school friend Raymond Washington. In one version of the story, the original name of the gang was the Cribs, but drunken members of the gang routinely mispronounced the name as Crips, and it stuck. A rival gang member murders Washington in 1979.

1976 -- The U.S. Supreme Court allows capital punishment, suspended in 1967 when the court rules it to be "cruel and unusual punishment," to resume.

1977 -- The California Legislature reinstates the death penalty for the state. California currently has the nation's biggest death row population, with nearly 650 inmates. Eleven inmates have been executed in California since 1977.

Feb. 28, 1979 -- Prosecutors say Williams and three friends smoke PCP-laced cigarettes and drive to an industrial area east of Los Angeles in search of a place to rob. The four find a convenience market, and according to testimony at Williams' trial, Williams takes the lone employee, Albert Owens, 26, to a back room. Williams shoots out a security monitor and then kills Owens with two execution-style shots to the back. The robbery netted Williams and his associates about $120. Williams has consistently denied killing Owens.

March 11, 1979 -- Prosecutors say Williams, on his own, breaks into the office of the Brookhaven Motel in South-Central Los Angeles. Once inside, according to prosecutors, he kills three members of an immigrant family from Taiwan who owned and operated the motel: Yen-I Yang, 76, his wife Tsai-Shai Yang, 63, and their visiting daughter, Yee-Chen Lin, 43. As with the Owens killing two weeks before, there are today no surviving witnesses to the crime. But three of Williams' friends -- all with criminal histories and motivation to lie, Williams says -- testify that he confessed to the killings. A ballistics expert links a shotgun shell at the motel to Williams' gun. Williams has also steadfastly maintained his innocence in the Yang killings.

1981 -- Williams is tried and convicted in Los Angeles Superior Court of all four murders, plus two counts of robbery, and is sentenced to death. He arrives at San Quentin's death row on April 20.

1987 -- Williams is placed in solitary confinement for 6 1/2 years after committing a string of violent incidents behind bars, including assaults on guards and other inmates.

1988 -- The California Supreme Court affirms Williams' death sentence, and he files his first federal appeal to the U.S. District Court.

1996 -- Williams, with co-author Barbara Cottman Becnel, publishes the first of a series of anti-gang books aimed at children, Gangs and Wanting to Belong.

April 1997 -- Williams writes an apology for his role in creating the Crips street gang. "I am no longer 'dys-educated' (disease educated). I am no longer part of the problem. Thanks to the Almighty, I am no longer sleepwalking through life," Williams writes.

2001 -- Williams publishes a memoir of his years behind bars on San Quentin's death row. He says the tone of the book is intended to warn kids away from following his life of crime. "To get a feel for what it's like to live in a prison cell, test yourself," Williams writes. "Spend ten hours -- nonstop and alone -- in your bathroom." Williams is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the first time by Mario Fehr, a member of the Swiss Parliament. He has been nominated for the prestigious award a total of six times.

2002 -- The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upholds Williams' conviction. But in a rare move, the panel urges then-Gov. Gray Davis to consider commuting the death sentence to life behind bars, citing Williams' anti-gang efforts.

2004 -- Williams publishes his autobiography, Blue Rage, Black Redemption.

Oct. 11, 2005 -- The U.S. Supreme Court denies Williams' petition for writ of certiorari, which asked the high court to review the lower court rulings in his case.

December 2005 -- The California Supreme Court rejects a request to reopen Williams' case because of allegations that shoddy forensics connects him to at least three of the shotgun murders.

Dec. 8, 2005 -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who reportedly met with Williams in the 1970s while working out in Venice Beach, holds a clemency hearing to help decide whether Williams' sentence should be commuted to life in prison. In a behind-closed-doors meeting, Williams defenders and prosecutors each have 30 minutes to plead their case to the governor. The last California governor to grant clemency was Ronald Regan in 1967, who spared the life of a mentally ill killer. After the meeting, Schwarzenegger gives no indication which way he will decide.

Dec. 12, 2005 -- Gov. Schwarzenegger denies Williams bid for clemency. In a written statement, he says: "The facts do not justify overturning the jury's verdict or the decisions of the courts in this case."

Dec. 13, 2005 -- Williams is executed by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison.

He dropped out of school at age 14 and began shining shoes and working in pool halls and strip joints.

In 1958, he joined the army but was jailed after he stabbed a white recruit who was fighting with a black soldier.

In 1963, Pryor, working as a comic, made it his goal to appeal to white audiences and become more popular than Bill Cosby. His early material was straitlaced and wholesome enough for the whole family.

He received great acclaim for the role of a drugged-out piano man in Lady Sings the Blues, one of his earliest film roles.

Through the years, he sired multiple children by multiple women and was married multiple times. He achieved commercial success with movies and comedy albums despite his womanizing, drug use and drinking.

During the birth of his daughter Elizabeth Anne, Richard was in jail for marijuana possession.

One of his daughters, Rain, starred as T.J. Jones on Head of the Class.

Pryor was sentenced to a year in jail and fined $10,000 for failing to pay his taxes from 1967 to 1970. The fine was reduced to $2,500, and he served only 10 days in jail.

The Richard Pryor Show, a 1977 variety program, lasted just four episodes. Pryor fought network censors and his own doubts throughout the short run.

He cowrote (but didn't star in) the classic Mel Brooks western comedy Blazing Saddles. He also wrote for Sanford and Son and The Flip Wilson Show.

Pryor suffered his first heart attack while high and in the middle of a threesome.

Pryor was once arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after shooting wife Deborah McGuire's Mercedes with a .357 Magnum to prevent her from leaving. She later dropped the charges.

While freebasing cocaine, Pryor doused himself with cognac and lit himself on fire in what he later called a suicide attempt. While on fire, he ran from his home through the streets. He spent more than six weeks in the hospital recovering from third-degree burns that covered over 50 percent of his body.

He hosted the half hour children's show Pryor's Place that ran in the mid 1980s. The series featured guests like Sammy Davis Jr., Willie Nelson, Robin Williams and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Pryor adopts stray dogs and opposes the use of animals in laboratory testing. He has sent out Christmas cards asking friends not to donate to groups that harm animals.

In the summer of 1986, Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the central nervous system that causes vision and motor-skills problems.

In May 1991, Pryor suffered a massive heart attack, his third. He survived quadruple-bypass surgery and vowed to make the most of his latest chance at life.

His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, awarded to him for his work in motion pictures, is at 6438 Hollywood Boulevard.

His film Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling is an autobiographical look at Pryor's career and was filmed on location in Los Angeles and Peoria, Illinois. He wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film.
